Ecological Prescribed Burns for the restoration
of endangered oak savannah and tall grass prairie.

Lands & Forests Consulting has initiated their forestry expertise and professional prescribed fire experience into an integral prescribed fire service. This applies prescribed fire in ecological, silvicultural and wildlife management restoration applications.

Lands & Forests Consulting has available a well equipped professionally trained team experienced in the aspects of ecological prescribed burn planning. Fire intelligence, behaviour, communications, ignition, suppression and safety are all included in our professional quality prescribed burn plans.

We successfully carry out many ecological and silvicultural burns in Southern Ontario each year. The remnant oak savannah and tall grass prairie habitat is a unique, yet threatened vegetation community. Lands & Forests Consulting is dedicated to the recovery of these significant ecosystems.

Initiating controlled burns of certain areas has revitalized and encouraged regeneration of provincially rare endangered oak savannah woodlands, its plant community and the ecological recovery of endangered habitat.

Our staff consists of qualified fire bosses and trained personnel using the Ministry of Natural Resources prescribed burn methods for plan development, plan execution and site evaluation. Lands & Forests Consulting is fully insured and very cost competitive.

City of Toronto

The City of Toronto initiated ecological prescribed burning in the spring of April 1997 contracting the services of Lands & Forests Consulting. The prescribed burn plan is a continuation of the operational program to restore High Park’s degraded black oak woodlands and savannah. Since 1997, eight burns have been implemented in High Park. Similar prescribed burns were implemented to restore other remnants of black oak savannah/woodland in Lambton Park in Spring of 2001, 2002 and 2005 and in South Humber Park in Spring of 2002, 2003 and 2005. Tremendous success of the prescribed burn program is evident in the park and is reflected through vigorous growth and obvious increase in size and density of the groups of native grasses and wildflowers as well as presence of abundant black oak regeneration in the areas where prescribed burn was applied. The tremendous success of the prescribed burn program in High Park has also been recognized during annual visits by noted specialists in the various fields of ecological restoration.

High Park

Black oak savannah woodland is a vegetation community consisting of the open woodland dominated by black oak trees with the under-story of tall prairie grasses, wildflowers and shrubs. This type of vegetation community covered more than 2000 km˛ in Ontario before European settlement. There are now remaining only 21km˛ and High Park is sheltering valuable 22 ha (1%) of this endangered ecosystem. The successes of these ecological prescribed burns in these parks are spawning new Toronto park initiatives. There will be many years of successes in the restoration of Toronto’s endangered Oak Savannah lands.
